on Monday evening, April 11th, a Communist demonstration was held in Alajuela, without the authorization of the local authorities. The participants numbered some 200 and behaved in a most orderly manner. The purpose of the demonstration was to obtain cheaper rent, unemployment protection, and a higher basic salary for peasant workers.
Some ten days ago a Communist demonstration was held in Cartago, also without authorization. Several of the participants were thrown into jail and have not yet been released. The Communist organization of that town has appealed to the courts for a fair trial of the arrested.
Both of the above demonstrations, although possibly organized by some central authority, were held under the auspices of the local organizations and solely with the participation of the people of the community.
The DIARIO DE COSTA RICA of April 13th carried what purported to be an interview with the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, in which the latter official announced that while the very conception of this Republic is based on free expression of thought and on the voice of the People in all matters, active steps must and will be taken for the combatting of any growth of Communism.
