REPRODUCED AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES DECLASSIFIED Anthority State Letter Wohe ay ME, NARA C2:0 24 18 DIVISION OF EASTERN SunFAIRS 2657 3685 DEPARTMENT OF STATE COSTA RICA WAR DEPARTMENT POPULATION AND SOCIAL URSA FRONTVED No. 2900 Propaganda of Foreign Origin, 1932 DIVISION OF Communist Activities, CORDE 818. 00B On April 14th there was staged a communist parag. in the town of Alajuela. This parado was hold with the approval of the Jefe Politico of the city. About 200 communists took part in this parade. At about the same time another parado was held in Cartago without the approval of the Jefe Politioo. As a result of failing to got permission for this last mentioned parado, several of the leaders were put in jail. The comminist Party is now not only attempting to get them out of jail, but also to prosecute tho Jefe Politico of Cartago for illegal arrest.
These two parades have done woh to conter the attention of publie interest on commistio activities in Costa Rica. Undoubtedly this movement is spreading very rapidly in this country. The weaknose of the present governmont has favored this expansion.
Within the last few weeks several artiolos hizo appeared in the now papers doolaring that many of the school teachers and college professors are communists at heart, and are apreading the communistio idee among the youth of the country. It is charged especially that don Carlos Luis Saenz, Secretary of the Normal School at Horedie, 1e very active in communistio and anti American propaganda.
818. 00B 35 On the night of April 20th a bomb was exploded in the Mercedes Church in San José, causing some damage to the church but not injuring any person.
Another unexploded bomb had been found in this church a few days prior to the explosion. The communists are being blamed for this outrage although no one has been able to trace the author of the explosion. As no political group would think of doing such a thing, and communists are known to be against all religions, they are naturally suspected. have been informed that don Ricardo Jimenes has asked Sonor Raul Guardian, a former Cabinot member, to head a commission after the 8th of May to study the communistio problem and to stamp it out. Soñor Guardian is man of onorgy and courage and believe is a very good solection for this important job. With a stronger government in the saddl. it is believed that comunis will have much more opposition than it now has.
