DECLASSIFIEDS Ahority State Letter mhz öy m, NARA Cate 24 18 STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL was reliably informed this morning that the rupture between General Ubico and Cardona is supposed to be merely a smoke screen, and that they are still in close and sympathetic touch with each other. My informant asserted that during the time Cardona was in Mexico he was plentifully supplied with funds sent him from Guatemala and that since his arrival in Costa Rica he has had ample funds at his disposal.
Consequently, my informant says he is fully convinced that the formation of the Fascist (Socialist Revolutionary) Party in Costa Rica under Cardona leadership is an integral and important part of General Ubico alleged plan to overthrow the Jiménez Government in this country and eventually bring it under his influence. It is suggested that my despatch No. 16 of November 3, 1933 be read in this connection. The Fascist movement is as yet too young for a reliable appraisal of its importance to be made.
It does not appear that it has attracted any particularly reputable interests, although the press has linked the name of Bernardo Yglesias, ousted Director of the National School of Agriculture and son of President Rafael Yglesias 11430 (vide despatch No. 4635 of September 14, 1933. with the party. But if, as it now appears, Cardona has the moral and financial support of General Ubico, this Fascist movement may be able to
