MEMORANDUM BY MINISTER SACK Mr. Chittenden, General Manager of the United Fruit Company in Costa Rica, called to leave a memorandum, the original of which he is filing with the Foreign Minister, Don Raúl Gurdián, indicating that Communist agitators are becoming more active in Costa Rica and are threatening assassinations and seizure of property.
The information, Mr. Chittenden says, has come to representatives of his Company from scores of sources, and he deemed it of sufficient importance to inform the Foreign Minister in his personal capacity, and through him, the President of the Republic, both of whom are long time personal friends of Mr. Chittenden. At the same time, Mr.
Chittenden saia, he wanted this Legation to know what was being said, insofar as his information indicates.
Mr. Chittenden declared that he was not certain as to how much importance should be attached to the reports, but did deem them of sufficient importance to pass along to the Executives of the country. Aside from his personal interest in the matter through his long time residence in Costa Rica, the fact that he is married to a Costa Rican lady, and most of his children were born in Costa Rica, Mr.
