REPRODUCED AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES. DECLASSIFIED Athority Statele Herluhr By ME, NARA Date 2418 translation of a letter written by Mr. Chit. ucuucu vo President Jiménez, informing him of the intention of the Company to cut fruit on its own plantations. The Costa Rican Government now appears to be taking energetic steps to prevent further disturbances and to insure protection to farmers and to laborers. In addition to detachments of police under the supervision of General Ricardo Monge, Director of Public Safety, who have been sent to key points along the line, the Government on yesterday morning deported seven Nicaraguans who were alleged to be Communist leaders of the strike movement.
These men were taken in a gasoline launch from Port Limon to the Nicaraguan port of Bluefields. Their names are: Juan José Gutiérrez, Gregorio Tellez, Fidel Flores, Raimundo Monjarez, Ezequiel Rodríguez, Leo cadio Hernández and Pedro Joaquín Zeledón Saenz.
There are in the jail at Port Limon fifteen other leaders of the movement, eleven of whom are Costa Ricans, three Nicaraguans, and one a Colombian. They are all said to be Communists.
In Vice Consul Johnson despatch (Enclosure No. 1)
he makes the point that. It is quite apparent that the strike is a purely Communistic movement and not a willful uprising by the workers. This is made evident by the fact that representations to the employers have not been made or even considered by the workers since the submission of the demands.
Supporting this view is a circular attached to Mr.
Johnson despatch from the West Indian Committee (negro workers) who call upon their fellow workers to remain at work
