Mr, Chittenden declared that his office has been open for twenty eight years to discuss with the employees their problems and that in the present strike no one has been to see him other than Carlos Luis Fallas, a Communist leader whose arrest has been ordered by the Government.
Mr. Chittenden added that he did not consider Fallas an accredited representative of the banana workers for the reason that he is neither a banana worker nor a resident of the community.
In the meanwhile a reported effort to reach an agreement between Dr. Arturo Volio, President of the Congress and one of the large banana growers affected by the strike and Communist Congressman Manuel Mora, came to nought. Mr. Volio said he had no authority to discuss settlements on behalf of his fellow banana growers nor did he regard Mora as an accredited spokesman of the workers. Mr. Mora, however, not only regards himself as WE the accredited spokesman of the workers but as the accredited leader of what is regarded by many as an attempt to foment a general strike. We are disposed to carry through to the end. The strike has the economic support of the workers of the country, Mr. Mora said in a newspaper interview which is regarded as significant of the general strike objectives of the Communists, In today issue of EL DIARIO DE COSTA RICA, Congressman
