Both of these men are well over seventy years of age and have alternated (barring 1914 1924) in the Presidency since 1906. Each has made it clear in press statements that he has no intention of seeking another presidential term, but despite these fairly categoric statements their wellwishers and admirers continue to advocate their candidacies, and particularly that of Ricardo Jiménez.
This tendenoy to cling to the weather beaten political oaks of the past has apparently arisen in view of popular distrust of new, untried men and fear of new ideas.
