An interesting tendency that has appeared in recent months is public sentiment in favor of the re election of Don Ricardo Jiménez when his term expires in May, 1936. Likewise, the name of Cleto González Víquez has been frequently mentioned in the press as the most desirable candidate available for the 1936 1940 term. Both of these men are well over seventy years of age and have alternated (barring 1914 1924) in the Presidency since 1906. Each has made it clear in press statements that he has no intention of seeking another presidential term, but despite these fairly categoric statements their wellwishers and admirers continue to advocate their candidacies, and particularly that of Ricardo Jiménez.
This tendenoy to cling to the weather beaten political oaks of the past has apparently arisen in view of popular distrust of new, untried men and fear of new ideas. Both Don Ricardo and Don Cleto are known: what they stand for, their political philosophy, have been well tested in practice. They have been on the political stage so
