October 5, 1934.
VISION OF COMMUNICATIONS AND RECORDS The Costa Rican Minister called and showed me a letter he had received from the Anti Imperialist League of the United States, protesting against alleged inhumane and violent treatment of communists in Costa Rica during the recent banana strike there. Minister Gonzalez said he bad received a number of such letters and was greatly incensed by them because of their insolent tone and for the further reason that he considered that the League and associated organizations were a real menace to the security of the Costa Rican Government.
He recited the development of the strike and stressed the fact that the Government had left the strikers in freedom so long as they remained within the law, but that once their activities became lawless it wasted no time or effort to put a stop to them. He did not add anything to the information we already have.
He said he was making no reply to the letters he had received. DEW Willard Beaulac.
