REPRODUCED AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES DECLASSITED Authority Stateletter Inhz. MLAs Cate 24 18 apparently substantiates the charges that such agents had succeeded in obtaining Costa Rican passports, and has led to a campaign by the Anti Communist Longue for the expulsion from the country of the Polish pedalon on the ground that they are undesi rable residents.
President Jiménes recently come to the defense of the Polish pedalers in a press interview in which he contended that these people, rather than being a detriment to the country, by their industrious habita were actually a valuable factor in the 11te of the country. The President pleaded for religioun tolerance and recalled that Spain capelled Jowe centuries ago and since regretted its action. Despite the President statement, however, the press continues to publish antiPolish articles.
While it is undoubtedly true that the charges made by the Anti Communist League and interested merchants against the Polish peddlers are comm. ggerated, there are reports that some of them at least are engaged in spreading Communist propaganda although leaders among the Polish group have denied this to the President.
There is also evidence that Costa Rican of tizenship has in some instances been aequired by Polish 61t1sens who have subsequently left the country and used their Costa Rican passports for travel abroad.
In a recent conversation with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sefior Curdián informed me that it was the intention of his Government to cancel the naturalization of the Polos who have left the countIT.
