REPRODUCED AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES. DECLASSIFIED Aphority Stateletter Mhz sy ML, NARA 0312 2498. Following the withdrawal of ex President Julio Acosta from the campaign, leaving Mr. Leon Cortés in undisputed possession of the field, the various elements opposed to Cortés candidacy cast about for an opponent to take Acosta place. After several weeks of political maneuvering, these various groups were able to gather sufficient financial and political support for the candidacy of Mr. Beeche to convince him that he could enter the campaign with a reasonable chance of success.
Mr. Beeche, in contrast to his opponent Mr. Cortés, decidedly falls within the Costa Rican elder statesman tradition. As will be noted from Confidential Biographic Data dated June 17, 1935, Mr. Beeche has occupied a number of positions of distinction under the Costa Rican Government; among others, Minister to the United States, Consul General in Paris, President of the Central American Tribunal of Arbitration, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Head of the Costa Rican delegation to the Central American Conference in Guatemala City in March 1934, and the position from which he has just resigned, Chief Justice of the Costa Rican Supreme Court.
It is interesting to note that the acceptance of the candidacy by Mr. Beeche has put an end to the persistent and stubborn efforts of a certain sector of the population to prevail on President Jiménez to run again. Apparently people devoted to the aging President for his wisdom and political tact see in Mr.
