The shooting occurred in Mr. González office after the two murderers had presented him with a letter demanding money under pain of death. When he grappled with one of them, they killed him in cold blood, following which they took refuge in another part of the building and engaged in a gun fight with the police. When they realized their case was hopeless, they apparently both committed suicide.
Popular opinion as well as references in the newspapers have attempted to link the crime with the Communist Party in this country. Leaders of that Party have denied any connection with the affair, and have pointed out that Communist principles do not recognize individual assassinations as a party doctrine.
Nevertheless, public opinion will undoubtedly be aroused against the Communist cause in this country regardless of its complicity in the assassination.
This sentiment will probably strengthen the political cause of León Cortés, who has promised in his campaign speeches to take repressive measures against the Communist Party in this country.
Despite the disavowal of the Communist Party, police have discovered that the two assassins, who were brothers, had been reading Communist and anarchist literature published abroad. Their extortion
