For the preservation and perfection of Costa Rican democracy and for the improvement of the living conditions of the people within the bounds of that democracy our party proposes to fight in the future with all its force. In view of these aims, it will not seem absurd that we are asking, although it may be only as observers, all those Costa Ricans who have become detached because of their progressive mentality, their devotion to democracy, and their personal independence to attend our meeting. On the contrary, we think that during such difficult moments so saturated with social incertitude as the present our duty is to bind together in the service of our country all those who are not attached to purely party interests.
The manifesto then closed by adding that the presence of those not affiliated with the party would in no way imply the slightest political or other obligation.
Another appeal to the public similar in substance by implication but differently worded was printed in large letters in LA HORA on January 27. This appeal read. Democrats! Attend the great electoral convention of the Workers and Farmers party (Bloque) for the designation of its candidate for the presidency of the Republic which will take place Monday, January 30, at seven thirty in the evening at the Mendoza Stadium. On January 24 this newspaper stated, with reference to nominations at the approaching meeting, that candidates for the presidency and for deputies in Congress would be selected by majority vote and that members of the party who are in good standing and are active elements in the Marxist group would be permitted to cast votes.
It was further added that a large sector of the communists were in favor of the secretary general of
