On the other hand, the leaders of the local party are on intimate terms ith Dr. Demetrio Porras, neneral secretary of the Socialist Party of Panama, who visited Costa Rica in January, this year, and was shown every consideration by wora and his associates and was a speaker at several of their meetings. Local party leaders are also understood to be friendly with Echevez, the secretary or the Communist Party in Panama which is stated to be allieu with the Communist International. How much further this connection goes is not known. It is reported that there is a Trotskyist croup (Fourth International) in Panama, but the Costa Rican communists do not appear to have any interest in that group, or to be associated in any way witn tue Trots syists in Mexico. Although there are indications of common ties between the Communist Party of Cuba and the Costa Rican communists it does not seem that there is active cooperation toward the accomplishment of any definite objective.
It may be stated, then, that the Communist Party in Costa Rica appears to be, under its present leadership, definitely less interested in international affairs or international communistic organizations than in domestic matters. The leader of the party, apparently a level headed, realistic
