DECLASSEU The proposal, because of its unusual nature at that moment, did not even merit the honor of a reply. But, after a period of time, and opportunely, a reformist and progressive President, Dr.
Calderón Guardia, comes to his people as another Moses with the new tables of the law graven not in marble but in the hearts of the truest followers of Christ, the priests. And, oh! miracle! the unleashed furies become noble words of recognition, and they declare, with patriotic understanding, that this alone had been their dream for the good of the disinherited of their beloved Costa Rica. That in reality they had never desired destruction and slaughter but only a progressive evolution of the ideas and sentiments of their fellow citizens in order to attain perfect harmony of wills and of the various forces causing the national phenomena. The social guarantees, the labor code and other resolutions which constitute the near machinery in the equilibrium of life, cause that miracle, and, therefore, they, acting in the faith of their sincerity, would abandon all attack against religion, against property legitimately acquired, and against the family, basis of the well being and tranquility of our country. And, in that miracle of good for the future of our country, the discreet wisdom of our church has not ceased to be a value, opportune and most able. How then to reject those our brothers! How loyally, demand of them more than they have already done? Time, which is a great master, will finally convince them that that is the only route which leads to social peace and felicity. Let us no longer the, honestly, speak of communism in our land. The abstract ideologies of Marxism, ancient communism, have no interest for us, nor have they ever been constructive. Let us solve our present concrete problems, and trust that Providence is watching over our country. Let us trust in Him, who is able to forge from a twisted line a straight one of impeccable beauty.
