UELLASOMEU DELLASCICU Señor Lombardo was quoted as stating that Mexico had received the news of the victory of Teodoro Picado in the recent elections with great satisfaction. The article also suggested that Señor Lombardo would take the opportunity offered by his trip to speak to President Getulio Vargas of Brazil with the idea of freeing Luis Carlos Prestes. The article did not state what other persons met Lombardo Toledano at the airport, mentioning only that a great number of workers were on hand to receive him.
In our last conversation prior to Sunday elections Ambassador Córdova expressed frankly his preoccupation over certain features of the situation. He had impressed by the size of the demonstration organized by the Cortés party in San José on February and while he as well as I, expected a Picado victory on the thirteenth, he was fearful lest that result be too much at variance with the popular will. He also expressed his high personal regard for President Calderón Guardia, although he also had not failed to note the recent tendency on the part of the President to consider himself somewhat of a martyr to the cause.
