ULASSMED Southerity Stateletter Inhz 8; ML NARS Cate 24 18 castillo LEGATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 115an José, Cost: Rica March 15, 1944 Doo or 630 Youth movet in Costa Rica STR CITY CONFIDENTIAL Referring to despatch No. 1073 of February 3, 1944, concerning César CASCALLAR the Ambassador has the honor to report that Sr. Cascallar apparently has succeeded in creating an interest among youth groups in Costa Rica to organize. He, under date of February 22 wrote from Panamá to Thony VASSILIU, Apartado 1351, San José, congratulating the latter upon the success of the Comité Nacional de la Federación Juvenil de Costa Rica in obtaining a house from the Costa Rican Government, Cascallar asked to be remembe red to his friends in Costa Rica, including Manuel MORA, head of Vanguardia Popular.
Vassiliu, it was learned from the Embassy well informed, confidential source was formerly an employee of Sterling Products International in San Salvador, but was obliged to leave there because of his communist activities.
He came to Costa Rica about three months ago and has been employed by the local office of Sterling Products, 818. 00B 39 On February 21, Vassiliu wrote Jaime GRAVALOSA and and Luis AZCARÁTE, Paredo 14, Dpto. ŁO, Mexico, both of whom are known to be associates of Cascallar, informing them that he has been named president of clab Juventud Unida. He also stated the club of which he is head has started to integrate youth clubs in Alajuela, Cartago and Puntarenas. It is the intention of the groups to hold a Congress of Costa Rican Youth at the end of May. The following are known to be members of the Club Ju4 ventud Unida: Arnando ARAUZ, Arturo MONTERO, Ignacio DE LA. CRUZ, Clemencia VALERIN, Gilberto DE LA CRUZ, Fernando SOTO, Zaida de SEMOS, Maggie BREEDY, Maria Eugenia RODRIGUEZ and Thony VASSILIU. With the exception of Miss Breedy, none of the persons named are known to the Embassy although it is anticipated further information will become available in the near future, Miss Breedy is also an employee of the local office of Sterling Products and is known to be sympathetic to communist ideas.
