de 4, Der8. 00 2643 TWO events of May Day in San José are widely acclaimed in the press, as well as in informed political circles, to constituts defeats for the Calderonista and Vanguardista elements, not only into diminishing immediately their influence in the governing of the country but also in carrying out their plans for continuing in power. One was the unexpectedly successful meeting and demonstration staged by the Rerum Novarum Federation of Labor which was attended by the President of the Republic and by Archbishop Sanabria. More details of this meeting will be reported to the Department in another despatch. Its political significance, however, lies in the fact that the Pre.
sident of the Republic attended this meeting as well as that of the Vanguardia Popular, whereas only his attendance at the latter had been previously announced.
The rightist press alleges that the public attendance at the Rerum Novarum meeting was even larger than that at the Confederación de Trabajadores de Costa Rica gathering Reports which are believed to be more reliable indicate that about 10. 000 people were present at the former and between 11, 000 and 12, 000 at the latter.
