Guardar

HARRY TRUMAN LIBRARY Papers of NATHANIEL DAVIS We discussed briefly the arrangements for Mr.
Ulate evacuation in the order of march. The Archbishop, who took complete command of the situation, stated that when we should arrive at the house, he would go in first alone for a private conversation with Mr. Ulate as he had certain statements to make to him (this being to repeat my conversation with the Foreign Minister. He then would come out and tell us Mr. Ulate decision and the evacuation then would take 1: place. This was agreed to by all hands. The Archbishop then said that he, General Picado, and would ride together in one car and the rest of the party would follow in others. General Picado immediately said that, of course, as commander of the forces, he could not ride in the car of the American Ambassador.
The Archbishop said that was not the intention but we all would ride in his car. General Picado accepted this gratefully. Upon arrival at the block in which Mr. Ulate was known to be, the Archbishop directed the cortège to a back street and told us to remain in the cars while he went inside and thereupon entered the block through a garden gate. He returned in about 10 minutes and said he had spoken to Mr. Ulate and it was the unanimous desire of him and his companions that they all be taken. to the Artilleria. General Picado replied Magnifico, accept that proposal. The Archbishop then directed us to proceed around the corner where we saw Mr. Ulate and his friends standing on the porch of a small villa.
We went up on the porch. The Archbishop formally introduced each of us to Mr. Ulate then turned to the General and said Take charge. Mr. Ulate said. Before we depart, wish to say one thing to the diplomats present. Of the six gentlemen standing behind me, one is the secretary of my party; one is an employee of my newspaper; one is a young relative; one is a young relative of Dr. Valverde; and two are colleagues of the lat ter. These gentlemen are the 25 armed and Honduran generals you have been told are with me. Don René, letig go.
The Archbishop, Mr. Ulate, and General Picado then entered the Archbishop car which headed the procession. Next came an armored truck containing the six companions
