RESTRICTED Pags countries such as Bernard Shaw and so had little significance. He did not say, however, that Guzman visit lasted a year. At another point he said that Ferreto is probably far more to the left than many of the other members of his organization but that, irrespective of extremes of both right and left within the Vanguardia Popular, its policies have been determined and followed as policies of an organization and not as the expressions of the feeling of persons of either extreme.

He said that, however, he felt that Figueres, who was born in Costa Rica, is acting largely for motives of self interest and ambition and that the uprising is not Nazi inspired.
At one point during the conversation Hora said that having eight deputies in the forecoming Congress and having a well organized and politically cohesive party, he felt that he had sufficient power to see that the social gains of recent years are maintained. He said that he had no thought other than to maintain those gains through lending his support to the side which he felt would be most agreeable to their protection.
It may be significant that, whereas throughout the conversation Mr. Ivora was careful to refer to the views and aspirations of his party, when thus referring to Vanguardia eight deputies and disciplined organization, the personal pronoun was emphasized. have eight deputies. have a well organized party. have sufficient power. In concluding his remarks he added that he wanted to make it clear that whatever the outcome of the present unsettled situation would be, he and his party stood (1) for the preservation of the social gains, that is, the labor and social security laws and the social guarantees of the Constitution. 2) for a truly democratic orientation, and (3) that whatever the arrangement might be his party would not suffer persecution or be disbanded.
