Guardar

HARRY TRUMAN LIBRARY Papers of NATHANIEL DAVIS April 22, 1948. spent a dui Büs tay at the office drafting renorts on the recent doings, with a separate one on the role played by each of the principal leaders. Quite a lot of States mail came in. Now that the planes are flying again suppose that the mail that has been niling un in Panama and Nicaragua will come through rapidly.
When got home for lunch found colonels Lopez Roig and Campos Jimenez waiting for me outside the gate. took them in for a drink and chat hout recent events. It appeared.
that Lopez wanted a visa for the States. He had been asked o to stay on with Brenes but had received tip that he had better get out of the country. arranged for him to come to the office this afternoon and get his visa, then asked him in turn to reinstate the three nolicemen who have guarded our house. He said he would do what he could about it.

Just after got home this evening the President phoned and asked me to come around. He had received a telegram from Somoza reiterating his charge that a large group of Nicaraguan revolutionaries are congregating at Port Limon and demanding that Costa Rica stop them. The Pres had drafted a reply saying he had no control over Limon, had no way of doing anything there, and anyway he will only be in office until May He wanted to know what thought. said sucha a message would play right into Somoza hands and he would use it as proof that Costa Rica can fulfill its international obligations. suggested a reply saving simply that he would cause a thorough investigation to be made and would reply more fully as soon as that had been done.
Shortly after dinner Padre Nunez showed un at the house with two other officers and an impressive armed guard in two cars. invited him and his officers in for a telk, and when learned that none of them had hed sunner offered to feed them. The officers accented gladly but said the guard would go to police headouarters for something. Sis whinned una good dinner in no time. took the occasion to impress on Padre Nunez that if his neonle go ahead with any plans they may have for a military junta or other violent rupture of constitutional provisions they would be in trouble with the rest of the world over recognition. gave him a brief discourse on international law for which he thanked me. also asked him for the facts about the so called relief mission to Limon supposedly sponsored by the Salvadorean Red Cross, and to say a word of caution about reprisals contrary to the terms of the surrender agreement.
