After had gone to bed last night, Ambassador Sol telephoned to ask I had any news from Salvador. gave him the substance of the telegram ve received yesterday evening. He thanked me and asked for any thing more we might get Ha I will never get anything, R! When got to the office this morning, Harshberger was there with a report that the army had asked for the use of the PRA camp at Macacona. He had replied that he could not let them have it without authority and suggested they approach me. He added that the camp is scarcely big enough for the 500 men they want to place there; 1t 19 aly ready partially oocupied by highway employees; there is a good deal of valuable equipment there; and the water supply is utterly inadequate. On the other hand, there 18 an abandoned camp at Cuacimal, some 30 miles beyond, which has adequate buildings and is on a river with plenty of water. PRA is not using the camp at present. sent Col.
Hughes to Seguridad Pública to tell them that under the working agreement between PRA and the Ministry of Public Works they have a right to house highway workers at Guacimal, and for goodness sake, don ask any official questions.
After reading telegrams from the Department telling of the COAS neeting and from Salvador reporting on events there, telephoned Ambassador Sol. He was very grateful.
There is not much use passing on bad news to him but he is feeling rather alone and seems to appreciate the attention. staff meeting and usual routine consumed the rest of the morning.
In the afternoon learned that most of the Junta had accompanied Figueres to Liberia and thought that meant could not see Odio to find out what he thought of the COAS decisions. Further news from Salvador came in and dropped around to the Salvadoran Embassy to pass it on.
Found our Panamanian colleague there. Neither of them had any news, but both thought the COAS business fine. Sol said Mariano Anderson is in jail. He is going to try to get him out under his protection.
Returned to the office and found that Odio was in his office so ran over to the Foreign Office. He also thought the COAS matter fine, is sure Costa Rica has proved herself to be the innocent victim of aggression and to more of the evidence of Nicaraguan involvement secured from the
