The followers were a rabbi composed mostly of irresponsible youngsters, and thei progress was punctuated by shouts of derision against the United States and of Viva Costa Rica! and Down with the Yankees! most regrettable incident was the insulting of American tourists, who were on the streets at the time.
The day of this demonstration over a hundred tourists arrived in San José from the United Fruit Co. steamer, Pastores, en route to New York from Panamá. party composed of a half a dozen of these visitors, including women, strayed to the park where the meeting was being held, and upon being observed by the mob were made targets for their abuse, Taunts and insults were huried at them and hats shaken in their faces.
One woman complained that she was struck by a stone, but a careful investigation of this incident has failed to produce sufficient proof to substantiate it, for it was admitted by her companions that the young woman in question was in such a state of alarm that she was afterwards unable to give an accurate account of the affair.
More than half of these tourists left the following morning, instead of remaining in San José for three days longer, as was their intention.
The offices of the United Fruit Co. were on the line of march, and six or seven of the windows in the building were broken by stones hurled by the crowd.
