Los diarios dicen que Estados Unidos piensa extender el protectorado que ejerce en Cuba y Santo Domingo a otros países de Centro América, y extrañan la indiferencia del Ministro de Costa Rica ante esa actitud, basado en que su país es una república próspera, tranquila y estable y no tiene necesidad de cambiar de política.
Los diplomáticos opinan generalmente que este proyecto va a ser un arma poderosa que esgrimirán contra Estados Unidos los agitadores antiyanquis.
Washington, 22 de julio. EI Presidente aprueba el proyecto de Bryan sobre establecer un protectorado en todo Centro América para proteger el canal de Panamá, proyecto que algunos senadores democratas aprueban y otros rechazan.
El Presidente ha declarado, sin embargo, que no llevará a cabo, si no cuenta con la opinión unánime en Nicaragua. Bryan projected treaty with Nicaragua, in which one is surprised to learn that Díaz is disposed to sacrifice the country in exchange for his political stability, has caused a very bad impression in all diplomatic circles, especially amongst those of Latin America. The papers say that the United States desires to extend to other countries in Central America the protectorate which it exercises in Cuba and Santo Domingo, and they consider the indifference of the Minister of Costa Rica strange in the face of the fact that his country is a prosperous, tranquil, and stable republic and has no need to change its politics.
Diplomats generally are of the opinion that this project will be a wonderful weapon, of which anti Yankee agitators will make use against the United States.
