It has been made evident, however, that the before mentioned inflammatory utterances of Colonel Perdomo, who had been recently promoted to the rank of Brigadier General, formed one of the causes of his death, and at the hands of one of his own countrymen.
As related to me today, the circumstances under which General Perdomo lost his life are as follows: on the night of July 25th in the Café Nacional of this city an argument arose between General Perdomo and a Mr. Rodolfo Mendoza over certain statements made in LA TRIBUNA, a newspaper published by the student body of the National University of Salvador and edited jointly by the before mentioned Mr. Mendoza and a Mr. Arturo Gómez. This argument, or controversy, had reference to what LA TRIBUNA had characterized as the unmerited and unfair ascension of General Perdomo from the grade of Lieutenant Colonel. and the impropriety and lack of dignity of that officer in haranguing the populace on street corners with denunciations and protests against the acquisition by the American Government of a naval base on the Bay of Fonseca, and in generally inciting the people of Salvador against a friendly nation, to which newspaper statements General Perdomo took exception, and he drew his revolver with the intention of shooting Mr. Mendoza.
