Vague rumors had reached us with regard to this affair, but we did not wish to say anything until we found ourselves in possession of extended details that were worthy of credence. For the present we shall confine ourselves to setting forth such details as are of undoubted veracity without adding to them a single syllable by way of cornment.
We are told that the Government of Salvador, in order to remedy the present situation in Nicaragua by excluding the Government of the United States, addressed itself to the Governments of Honduras and Costa Rica, urging them to send representatives to Salvador to hold a meeting to come to some agreement as to the means necessary for guaranteeing peace in Nicaragua and to save the Government of said Republic from the economic crisis.
The Government of Costa Rica answered the Salvadorean Government that it would be willing to take part in the conference, always provided that the Government of Nicaragua was likewise invited.
The Government of Honduras was in agreement on this point; the Government of Salvador acceded and was about to invite the Nicaraguan Government when they received from the latter a note saying that rumors had reached them that efforts were being made to hold a conference in Salvador, excluding Nicaragua, to discuss and settle affairs which were exclusively the business of the Nicaraguan people, and urging the former to give them all possible details of the affair.
