a piece of symbolism that falled. In St. Anthony, Idaho. Just about the same time, a full grown Bull Moose appeared, fled from the slaughterhouse, lingered, a symbol always, under a clump of weeping willows, eluded horsemen and hunters hot to rope him, and made for the open country. The St. Anthony school of symbolism 1s chuck full of meaning.
The Union League school is merely comic.
NICARAGUA AND THE TREATY.
The election in Nicaragua was a quiet one, with the exception of a quarrel at the polls in the capital, where a nephew of ex President ZPLAYA killed four supporters of General CHAMORRO, the winning candidate. The latter who for three years has been Nicaragua Minister at Washington, had no voting opposiion, Dr. IRIAS, nominated by the Liberal Party, withdrew some days before the election, saying that our Joyernment would not recognize any uccessful candidate who had been onnected with ZLAYA Administraion.
His disapproval of our new reaty with Nicaragua had been comnended by the Governments of Costa.
Rica, Salvador, and Honduras. It is reported that they have protested at Washington against what they say was the use of military and naval force by our Government to ensure the election of CHAMORRO.
There is no evidence thus far that the influence of the United States was exerted in this way, two ships had been sent to the Paotfio Coast of Nicaragua, but it does not appear that marines, were landed from them.
Rear Admiral CAPERTON, in command, said in a message sent to Washington: Many misleading state ments are being made.
Our posi tion is that the election should be honestly and openly conducted. The action of those who are retraining from voting is unjustifiable. One of these misleading statements was the published assertion that our MinIster, Dr. JEFFERSON, had given notice that no one formerly associated with ZELAYA would be permitted to be a candidate. It is said that tales of this kind led the Liberals to refrain from voting. But they had no candidate, and this explanation of their inactivity is not needed.
It is unfortunate that all parties were not represented at the polls, for the result and the false reports that are published and circulated tend to support the claim of some Nicaraguan Liberals and the three neighboring republics that our influence was unjustly and forcibly used in the Interest of the treaty, which the Liberals and these republics oppose. When that treaty was negotiated by Sec.
retary BRYAN, agreements with Costa Rica, Salvador, and Honduras concerning the grants in it should have been sought. So far as the canal oute is affected, Costa Rica has pod case, and Salvador and Hon rus, having coast lines on Fonseca Bay. should not have been wholly gnored in the establishment of the val station. It is not too late to Palety them and the Central Amer Court of Justice by new agree ge These might prevent revok war.
