OH! WHAT CONDITION.
Our esteemed confrére, the Editor of the Dominica Guardian, in a recent issue of that paper deplores the narrow mindedness of a certain section of that community in the following terms: We wonder why it is that people be they firms who advertise in, or smaller fries who subscribe to this paper will not understand that our Editor is not to be bought by their patronage in either line. THE GUARDIAN has been in existence now thirty years, and the policy which it laid down at start has remained as firm as the Rock of Gibraltar. Not even the patronage of th. Govern.
ment, twice given to the Editor at the outset of his career, has caused us to swerve from the path which we laid down and through which we have been running our course. We have had people mean spirited enough to withdraw their subscription, some their advertisements, for no other reason but that in our criticisms of public affairs, especially where the interest of the poor people is made to suffer, they felt a little pinching of the shoe.
In some instances these same people have come back again, alas, to play the same role over. To some we say What a Pity to others How Distressing.
It may be somewhat consoling to our distant cotem to know that he is not singular in this pitiable plight.
We are undergoing a similar experience. But in our case it is more confined to a class whom this journal has braved the lions in their dens to represent and defend. But what the alternative to day, a large majority of that very class view us in every other direction, but the one where we have stood out boldly and unflinchingly in their defence, and would stop at nothing to divert any patronage that would flow in our direction. Verily must we exclaim with the Editor of The Dominica Guardian WHAT PITY. HOW ISTRESSING and to ourselves OH. HOW UNGRATEFUL.
99 99 99 Strollers THE IRISH FREE STATE ELECTIONS The Irish Free State Government find themselves in a strong position as a result of the recent general election.
Out of 153 members elected only 44 are Republicans, and it seem quite likely that these will refrain from sitting in the Irish Parliament. All the Free State Ministers were elected by large majorities. The elections were conducted on the principle of Proportional Representation which seems to have acted with exceptional fairness. Thus in Leinster, for instance, the Government Party polled 36 per cent of the votes and secured 35 per cent of the seats.
The Republicans polling 23 per cent obtained 224 per cent of the seats. The Farmers (pro Treaty) polled 15 per cent and secured 15 per cent of the seats. Labour (pro Treaty)
received 17 per cent of the votes and obtained 20 per cent of seats; while the Independents (pro Treaty) polling per cent secured 74 per cent of the seats. Every man and woman over 21 years of age was entitled to vote, and of those who made use of the privilege 73 per cent supported candidates accepting the Anglo Irish Treaty and who are prepared to work in Parliament under the new Irish Constitution. Ireland has many problems to face but her future now seems brighter than has been the case for very many years.

Paraiso 11 sim, Mr. Airali road Station during 1906 Empire 11 Mr. Payne BRITISH IMPERIAL POLICY allow you Several days are being devoted by the Empire Premiers to the consideration of Foreign policy. Lord Curzon at the first session gave a complete resumé of developments in all parts of the world. The major portion of it was naturally confidential but part of it dealing with the German reparation question and the conclusion of peace with Turkey was given to the Press. The whole speech was very carefully compiled and was seen by the Prime Minister before it was made. Some criticism was levelled at the published passages because little indication was given of future British policy. This criticism is based on a misapprehension inasmuch as Lord Curzon speech was really a semi historical survey of political developments in the foreign field since the last meeting of the Imperial Conference two years ago. It was for him to present the Conference with all the facts. It from the discussion upon those facts that an Imperial Foreign Policy is to emerge, with the streng of a united British Empire behind it. Naturally the discussions have been cloaked secrecy. The meetings in Downing street are in effect those of a super Cabinet, and it is not customary for any country Cabinet to hold its discussions in public. We hazard the guess that when the final results are evolved and published one thing at all events will be clear a determination on the part of the whole Empire to strengthen by all possible means the League of Nations as the only apparent means of attaining and maintaining peace and ordered decency in Europe and the world at large.
