Mr. Stockley. Government Geologits has been carrying out certain investigations in Clarendon regarding the proposal to irrigate a large section of that parish with the Rio Minho river.
Sometime ago this proposal was put forward by leading planters of the parish to the Go.
vernment, but nothing resulted from it. The protracted drought wbich Clarendou, in common witb other parishes, has recently experienced, bas bas however, again forcibly brought it to the atten tion of the authorities that some means of keeping the cane industry alive for the benefit not only of its inbabitants but for the island must be found.
Consequently, during the early part of the present month, the Hon. George Muirhead, Custos of the parish, made further representations to the Government and it was mainly through his action that the latter consented to Mr. Stockley going to the parish to out certain works of survey.
The proposal is to dam the Minho at a point above May Pen.
The greatest difficulty, it is learnt, however, is the location of a suitable spot for the dam owing to the somewhat peculiar con dition of the formation of the riyer bed.
Mr, Stockley, fron what can be gathered, feels that the difficulty can be overcome and should the preject be carried out, it will certainly prove a blessing for the entire island.
