London November 1924. The frequent changes of Govertment in Great Britain during the last few years bave but very slightly affected the airship policy of the country, and to one particular all Governments and Political Parties have been in complete agreement; they each desire to give every encouragement to the commercial exploitation of the airshps.
And so, though Governments, have come and gone, plans have been matured and work pusbed steadily forward, until to day we are within measurable distance of that time when a giant airship will rise into the air in England and four days later sink gently to the ground in India, depositing 120 passengers for that sunny clime. For, just as the new Government arrives in office, contract has been signed for the construction of a mammoth airship, which, with its five million cubic feet capacity, will be by far the largest airship in the world.
By it it self the figure for cubic capacity does not convey much, SO contrast must be made with other celebrated airships.
The remarkable Germac built Zeppelin which has just crossed the Atlantic to be delivered to the United States Government, the ZR 3, is not quite balf the sza of the projected airliner, Previously built British airsbips, the wellknown 38 and 84 had each but two million cubic Luet capacity. The 34, it will be recalled, though two and ahalf times smaller tban the proposed monster, was a successful craft, and, indeed, was the first airship to cross fr. Europe to America, and the only one to do the double In point of fact, not one but two such airships are to be built, but one of these, that to be constructed by the personnel of the Royal Air Force at Cardington is for military purposes. Here will be considered only the airship devoted to commerce, but before doing 80 may be remarked that the 83 is being re conditioned in order that by actual experiment theoretical data for the new air sbips may be checked. It is in part of the bargin between the Government and the commercial grjup that are to construct the civil airship that there shall be ful exchange of techincal knowledge and experience gained by the work on either airsbip.
The first thing that strikes one when considering the new airship is that, despite the doubling of Bize, the new British ship will be but 30 feet longer than the ZR Their lengths respectively will be 695 feet and 665 feet. The reason for this is that in practice it has been found that shorter ship is more efficient and structurally stronger than the long cigar shaped vessel The elegant lines of the 83 and R34 will be missed, but safety first must always be the guiding principle in building passenger airship.
This principle is responsible for yet another striking departure from previous practice. On the new airship patrol will not be used as fuel. All fires on airships up to now have been caused by petrol, but in the projected vessel beavy oil will be used for fuel. Not only will the employment of this fuel (on the Ricardo kerosene cumhydrogen system) result in sifety, but also in great economy, Tue fuel to be used costs only balt as much as petrol, and the amount required 18 one third addition, cabines employment of helium gas instead of hydrogen (not commercial possibility) every thing bas been done to obviate danger of fire.
od To build the new air liner the airship company have acquired from the Government two big sheds at Howden, in Yorkshire an Admiralty airship base dur.
