STOP ALTO The 31st Annual Convocation of the Episcopal Missionary Diocese of the Panama Canal Zone was held Saturday January 27 with clergy and lay delegates from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Western Panama, Colombia, Panama and the Canal Zone. The Rt. Rev. Heber Gooden, Bishop of the District celebrated the Holy Eucharist and presided over the sessions of Convocation.
In this Convocation address, the Bishop stressed the increasingly important part the laity are assuming in the work of the Church and he characterized this as being in accord with Catholic Anglican and Democratic tradition. Schools of Religion wide use of the new teaching series of the National Council, constant Confirmation classes with two Confirmations yearly in many places, refresher courses, the preparation of simple tracts on the history, doctrine, sacraments and traditions of the Church, assumed quotas for the General Church Program, more careful licensing of lay Readers, more Postulants for Holy Orders all these things were evidence of the solid growth of the work and the increasing part played by the laity under the excellent clergy leadership.
The Bishop continued. Few people cculd be anything but Anglican once they understood what the Anglican Communion is: an historic, Catholic, Apostolic branch of Christendom, rejecting the claims of the Church of Rome and appealing to Scripture and the teaching of the ancient Fathers for the justification of her faith.

Bishop Gooden appointed the following Archdeacons to take care of the increasing work in his growing jurisdiction: the Rev. William Ziadie to be Archdeicon of Limon and costal area of Costa Rica on the Atlantic side; the Rev. Clarke Montgomery to be Archdeacon of Northern Colombia with residence in Medellin; Archdeacom John Townsend to be Archdeacon of Southern Colombia. The Ven. Nightengale continues as Archdeacon of Panama, and the Ven. Arnold Waldock as Archdeacon of Nicaragua.
During 1950 the largest number of persons were confirmed and received than any other previous year of the District. In the morning session Colonel Virgil Shaw of the Cathedral Chapter gave a talk on the principles and technique of making an Every Member Canvass, bassed on the successful canvass carried out at the Cathedral in Advent. Dean Ferris was warmly congratulated on the arrangements and careful organization of the Convention Week program that accomodated over 350 delegates, The Annual Convocation was concluded on Wednesday with a three day retreat for the clergy at Santa Clara, Rep. de Panams, conducted by Bishop Gooden with Dean Ferris as Warden.
