THE ATLANTIC ALL THE WEEK IN ONE DAY MERIROS EDITOR: JOS. TITOMAS Number 76 June 9, 1951 Year LIMON. COSTA RICA POST BOX 199 AN EARLY AFTERNOON ALARM whose heroic service was associated with the firemen, Mayor Pacheco and the Gvil Guardias on the scene, the fire was extinguished and seemingly not much material damage was done.
The Hotel Hispano. America, well known as the Park Hotel in this city of Limon is situated directly in front of the Fire Brigade Station therefore, DO movement of the Fire Engines was necessary: no blowing of whistle was heard. but like the stroke of a magic wand we aw men women and children rushing frantically to the building which was on fire at the early afternoon hour of last Saturday. The blaze was raging in one the rooms on the second floor. The square was littered with humanity: panic struck the residents in that vicinity, but thanks to the high efficiency of Captain Roberto Ortiz and our gallant firemen of the city Brigade and Captain Carlos Luis Castro, the Second Commander of Police An investigation was cffected to fina some trace or origin of the fire. By certain things observed in the room where the fire started, this gave rise to suspicion an act of criminal hands. Competent Judicial Authorities examined and noted the discoveries.
The Aslantic extends its deep sympathy to Messrs. Ingianna, the owners of the building and to Mr. Mrs. Ernest Cecil Lewis, the proprietors of the business for the loss sustained.
OUR TASK From Our Desk.
By The Editor. MATTER REQUIRES CONSIDERATION Each succeding day the problems of life become heavier on the residents of this Atlantic Zone. Opportunities come at times to some of our youngmen whose economic conditions would be improved if it was possible to immediately take hold of them. It is fresh in our memory how many of our youths have been added to the crews of Merchant Marines which have arrived at this port. Taking in con sideration that these ships have called at other ports before arriving at ours and with the vacancies for workmen, it is evidence of a special preference given to our men.
Today, the door is shut. The offer of the Captain or Master of the ship or launch cannot be accepted due to the fact our youngmen desirous to go to sea, if their documents for travel are not upto date, the money and time needed to go to the Ministry of Public Segurity in San Jose to secure the documents are not within easy reach There are times without rail transportation between this port and San Jose. Quite true, two Airplane Companies are giving daily services of several flights, but how many are financially able to find sixty four colones round trip rate, plus the cost of the documents and the inevitable expenses for a stay of at least two days. The ship cannot be delayed. The offer goes to another country. The weight of hardship remains on Limon.
The traveller in general finds it very difficult from viewpoints of finance and time to go to San Jose to obtain a passport or to get a visa. Limon is a seaport and an airport; a condition which makes it imperative that every matter to be required by the in coming or outgoing traveller should be readily obtainable.
The other provinces have road communications to San Jose, Limon has not. If need be to use the port of Puntarenas for embarkation, the traveller can conveniently get to San Jose and secure every paper needed.
These facts mentioned above, we hope they will serve as a medium of petition and due consideration be given so that the traveller arriving or leaving this port will be able to get the documents prepared at the office of our Governor as it was in the past years.
