The election of the Communists was a considerable surprise to even those who have closely followed the activities of the so called Workers and Peasants Party, and the fact that they polled more than 2100 votes in the Province of San José indicates their increasing strength. detailed report on Communist activities in this Republic is being made in a separate despatch.
Perhaps the greatest rupseth of the elections was the fact that General José María Pinaud, leader of the anti reelection Party, failed to obtain sufficient votes to assure his election.
Another surprise was the failure of the Opposition to elect a Deputy from the Province of Guanacaste, a former stronghold of Carlos Maria Jiménez, where Adriano Urbina, Opposition candidate who sought re election, was defeated.
In both of the above cases, the usual complaint is being made that partisans of the Opposition candidates were intimidated and threatened by local authorities who supported the candidates of the Administration Party.
