Turismo. LA REPUBLICA. Sábado 12 de setiembre de 1987 By, Carlos Vargas Gené ZARCERO IGH on the mountains, at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, in the middle of the Cen tral Mountain Range, lies Zarcero, one of Costa Rica most picturesque towns.
Cherished by its people, it has been maintained as an actual cradle of colour. Zarcero was, in fact, the first town to adopt national urban beautifying policy guidelines for the enjoyment of both visitors and Townspeople ming church whose architecture barely succeeds in displaying a Gothic intention, constitute the ideal setting for one of the country most artisticallydesigned city gardens. Thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of native Zarceroan don Evangelista Elizondo, the Zarcero Central Park abounds in flowers and large shapes of exotic animals: elephants, pelicans, cammels, and turkeys, among others, which have been painstakingly carved out of especially shaped cypress tres.
Zarceroans are a proud people of almost pure Spanish descent; most of them are blond, blue eyed, and excellent farmers, as were their ancestors from Spain Northern provinces. Zarcero may appear to the visitor as an enormous garden with year round production of carnations and roses which are either sent to the San Jose market, or exported to the United States and Canada.
This region is one of the main suppliers of vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, sweet peas, potatoes, carrots, and beets to the cities of the Central Plateau, particularly the capital city of San Jose, which, on account of its proximity to this area, enjoys the every day freshness of such products.
Housewives are mainly devoted to house cho res and maintenance; they are also experts in the preparation of preserved foods, notedly candied grapefruit, figs, and oranges of the bitter variety, as well as fresh cream cheese, and the stronger, aged, Cheddar type. few years ago, the Costa Rican Institute on Tourism held a contest of small towns throughout the country to select one as the most charming, the best kept, and most colourful: Zarcero was the proud winner of the First Prize.
Only an hour and a half drive from San Jose, over one of the most spectacularly scenic highways, this small mountain town, together with its mild climate and beautiful surroundings, is well worth a visit. The highway bypasses the town of Naranjo, which is the center of one of the country most important coffee producing zones. On your retum trip, we suggest you take a short detour to visit the small town of Sarchi, which is famous for the manufacture of the traditional painted oxcarts, and a variety of wooden and leather souvenirs and handicrafts. In Sarchi, many of the houses are decorated with the motifs used in the decoration of the unique Costa Rican oxcarts.
